“I know. Me too. I just… I want you to remember that it’s on thetable.” “It isn’tanymore,” shereplied in a quiet voice. Hefollowed her back upstairs. Flight Maintenance was one of the few offices with a view of the hangar, but black soot and thick firefighting foam still clung to the glass and obscured their view. Only littlecracks in thelayers gavesome hint of the space beyond, flashing with each pass of the yellow emergency lamps that still spun on some far, invisible wall. Their light cast a strange repetitive glow over the room while Sugé carefully cleared the workstation of aged, crumbling squares of paper and stretched out the sodden heap of the hazard suit to give it a final inspection. Beside her, Marek checked the cheap radios he hoped would keep them in touch. They wouldn't penetrate the concrete, but from his vantage point behind the soot-blackened windows, they had a clear line of transmission to the airlock. It was a total gamble whether they’d work or not, and he yawned uncomfortably as the knot of fear in his chest continued to draw itself ever tighter.
