There once was a young man called Jake who was not, (it had to be said), impartial to cake. A Michelin café nearby made the unadventurous sigh by offering one for £99 baked with fresh hake. (Reader, he managed to eat a full quarter!)

I've lots of these cat ones, but this is one of my favourites, since it also has Dylan in it...❤️ @thewombwellrainbow.bsky.social (PS Monk is the grey, and the particular Dylan fan, Pan his brother the tabby)
This evening the pusses were chillin' and Monk said to Pan “what I'm feelin' is the spirit is willin' and there's nothing so thrillin' than a volume of essays by Dylan”.

The limerick is an odd form, funny/serious, like an upbeat dirge or a downbeat dance - in that spirit here is a five-stanza meta-limerick (I suppose!) about mortality...enjoy! 🙏🥰
Turnstile walk with me a while it's a raw and a raggedy mile for the likes of you and I, my love – the bewildered and the beguiled walk with me for a while in the lengthening shade of the sundial it might well be early doors on or around the sixty-first floor – let’s get a little bit juvenile walk with me all the while we could unravel in style there must be some vice undiscovered stashed at the back of Life’s cupboard – a legendary Last Great Lost Stockpile walk with me one more while together we’ll wander in exile through the shadowy valley, all along Sniper’s Alley – that jagged, zigzagged defile walk with me this last while we can be reconciled there’s no ad infinitum but let’s not be frightened – we all must pass through that turnstile.

But here is a piece prompted by #TheLimerick
Embarrassing Bodies She came from Wiltshire Ever since she was a teenager. She had felt self conscious about her bust She would never buy a bra in Devizes, Where everybody knew everybody else’s business She always went into Bristol for that sort of a purchase. The rumours. Ohh yes, she had heard the rumours. Spoken sotto voce, into cupped hands As if they thought she was deaf Despite those rumours She had never entered any competitions. She preferred loose, shapeless clothing And anonymity. She had almost told the whole story To that farmer from near Leeds who she met online The trouble he had suffered For just one packet of seeds! His doctor was no help at all He ended up seeing a specialist at the RHS In the end, she never mentioned her own affliction Never met him in real life She stayed down South She felt that it was better that way

The Best Cake with Limerickish Flavour The best cake isn’t the one designed to serenade, or the one cloaked in gold leaf for a royal masquerade, or even the one using grandma’s recipe and homemade. It’s the one shared with an angel who hasn’t stayed, with crumbs on my chest, no judgment and no guests, only shadows of a stolen memory before they fade.
