In 1974, 🇬🇧 studio project/glam group The Rubettes earned US #OneHitWonder honors when their retro-tale of flirtation & young lust, “Sugar Baby Love,” spent 2 weeks at #37 on the US #Billboard #Top40… before dropping off the chart #WayneBickerton #TonyWaddington #TheRubettes #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Suddenly, you have a hit song with no group to tour…? You'll have to create one! Bickerton & Waddington did just that: The Rubettes. White suits, cloth caps, vintage mics. They looked like the music sounded… nostalgic & innocent, with a splash of glam & a touch of kitsch #TheRubettes #OneHitWondered

#TheRubettes stonden in 1974 5 weken op 1 in België met 'Sugar Baby Love'. De song werd aanvankelijk geweigerd door enkele kandidaat bands maar met The Rubettes werd het toch een ferme hit.

Are we done with Wayne Bickerton & Tony Waddington…? Of course not! Seeing the nostalgia for falsetto, doo-wop harmonies, and faux-’50s innocence that was all the rage in the early ‘70s, the two assembled a group of studio musicians to record a song. #TheRubettes #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

My very first fav song.
My dad recorded it from the radio onto tape in 1974. Spotlight was the only TV show with Pop/Rock every Sunday.

‘Hey Siri, play some music’
…
And surprise: #SugarBabyLove blasts through my speakers. Takes me back into the seventies, popular flare leg trousers, my first love and remembering I was able to sing along with this song including all the high notes. 😍

. RIP Tony Thorpe !
