Its #WildlifeWednesday. Today I am celebrating the rut. Always an impressive sight to see. though I don't like it if a deer gets injured. Neither deer picked up any obvious injuries in these photos

Wild Energy #ShareMondays2026

I attended a #creative #photography #workshop last week with #JiříHřebíček, exploring #ICM techniques with #wildlife 😊 More details in #ALT! #nature #reddeer #TheRut @theroyalparks.bsky.social @ldnwildlifetrust.bsky.social @protectthewild.bsky.social
I’ve enjoyed using creative photography techniques like Intentional Camera Movement and Multiple Exposure in botanical, landscape and live music photography for many years. I’ve always found it hard to transfer the skills to my wildlife subjects! I had the opportunity to attend a workshop being run by Jiři Hřebíček, past winner of the Natural Artistry category of Wildlife Photographer Of The Year, in my local park. It was a great day of experimentation, using a variety of different techniques, to create images that could tell a story that goes beyond the single moment in time. The stag pictured is well known in the park and has been nicknamed Wideboy for the extremely wide and beautifully symmetrical antlers he has. I used a one second exposure, as he was slowing moving forwards and bellowing, to emphasise those wickedly sharp antlers and his powerful presence. Here’s a description for those with visual impairments: A stylised, fine-art photograph of a large male red deer (stag), captured with a long exposure using intentional camera movement (ICM) that creates dramatic motion blur. The stag dominates the centre of the frame. It’s positioned in profile, facing toward the right side of the image. The most striking feature are the stag's massive, multi-tined antlers. The motion blur makes them appear layered and multiplied, creating a ghostly, repeating pattern that sweeps backward, emphasising the forward momentum of the stag. His entire body has a translucent, painterly quality. The legs appear doubled and fluid, blending seamlessly into the green grass below. Behind the rich sienna-brown coloured stag, there is a dark, dense copse of trees. The top edge of the foliage shows hints of golden-yellow autumn leaves, contrasting against the darker shades of forest green and deep shadow below. The intentional blur softens the sharp edges, transforming a standard wildlife shot into an ethereal, dreamlike impression of movement.

Another zoomed-in shot of mr. bugle as he turned towards me. Behind me was the other bull elk and his harem...I did not linger. 😆

The Conqueror Crowned #ShareMondays2025

With a wreath of ferns on #bloodied #antlers this #RedDeer #stag stands victorious on the riverbank, looking out over his harem. #TheRut #BushyPark @theroyalparks.bsky.social @ldnwildlifetrust.bsky.social #nature #wildlife @sheclicksnet.bsky.social
The lower third of the image shows the raised bank of the Longford River flowing through Bushy Park. Rust coloured stems and foliage of trampled bracken line the bank and deep green reeds rise up from the river itself. The backdrop is a hazy scene of mature trees, mostly oak, that line the riverbank further along it's course. A large rusty-orange coloured red deer stag is standing on the bank in the left of the image. He's facing the camera with his antlers curving upwards in a cup shape, just off-centre of the upper third of the image. There are torn green ferns wrapped around the base of the antlers, like a crown placed upon the head. The first branch of the antler on the deer's left is bright red from a fight with another dominant stag holding territory close-by. My SheClicks friends and I watched the fight unfold from around 150m away and it still felt almost too close! The stags were at full speed, around 30mph, and I struggled to follow them with the camera. One stag tripped over a hind laying down in the bracken and he almost tumbled right over. The hind was tossed upside down with her hooves in the air and I was very relieved to see her regain her feet and run off to safety. This image with the bloodied antler is a stark reminder of the injuries that can occur during The Rut, to the stags, the hinds, and anyone visiting the park who happens to stray too close to these powerful creatures.
