For many thru-hikers, the choice between a quilt and a mummy bag seems straightforward. Quilts are lighter, pack smaller, and eliminate insulation beneath the body—where it is compressed and contributes little warmth. Mummy bags are heavier and more restrictive, but they provide a fully enclosed sleep system with a hood, probably a draft collar, and fewer opportunities for cold air to enter.
