2778 years ago, on the 21st of April 753 BCE, according to legend, Romulus founded the city of Rome. Archaeological evidence of human occupation in the area goes back over 5000 years, with accelerating development in the early to mid 8th century BCE. #otd #history 🗃️

Luckily, the servant responsible for carrying out the deadly act took pity and placed them in a basket on the river’s edge. The river god Tiberinus calmed the river’s current, which safely carried the basket downriver. [🧵3/8]

Here’s another sculpture from the Iseum Campense, a representing Tiberinus, the god of the Tiber River. His PT is rounded, with a star inscribed on it. I think the bulk of the cornucopia is probably a modern restoration, but I’m not sure.

-¿Cristo?
-¡No! Tiberinus abrazando muy fuerte a Majencio

#OTD Alongside the Tiberinalia festival, the Romans used to celebrate the wedding between Pater Tiberinus (River Tiber) and Gaia (Mother Earth). Thanks to the Tiber that donated water to the Earth, the crops could grow and flourish.

Lay down upon the riverside
In the cold air, under the open sky,
And have his body at long last repose.
Before him as he slept the vey god
Of that place, Tiberinus of fair waters,
Lifting his hoary head through poplar leaves,

Happy Ludi Piscatorii! 🐟
Let's go fishing with hooks and nets!
On June 7th, the fishermen guilds in #Rome celebrated the Ludi Piscatorii (Games of the Fishermen) in honour of the God Tiberinus, the River #Tiber itself.
The chatch of the day was then sacrificed by the fire in the Temple of #Vulcan.

Throwback my trip to #Rome & realized the Tiber River is basically a graveyard:
-Legendary King Tiberinus was drowned in the river, hence its name
-In 133 BC, Tiberius Gracchus, tossed in postmortem (yikes)
-312 AD, Emperor Maxentius drowned during Battle of the Milvian Bridge
