On my way into work today I noticed a cranefly, Tipula confusa, resting on a wall. This is an autumn species (the similar Tipula rufina has a black stripe on the side of the thorax and is more common in spring).

D’autres espèces de son genre lui sont proches, mais a priori seule Tipula repanda peut porter à confusion, les autres n’étant pas présentes sur le territoire hexagonal. Les informations sur cette espèce sont rares.

Aujourd’hui je vous présente la plus grosse de nos tipules de France hexagonale : la tipule géante (Tipula maxima) ! Occupante des milieux humides, elle se reconnaît à sa taille et ses motifs alaires.

Although the craneflies don't look very mobile in these pictures, they were all wriggling away. Other smaller groups of them were gathered on the lee of large cowpats nearby. Not sure about the species because they were wriggling so much. Tipula of some kind. Tipula paludosa?

de Contrastwolkvleugel (Tipula confusa) is een vd Langpootfamilie (Tipula’s). De volwassen dieren kunnen niet eten (en ook niet bijten of steken); ze hebben als doel: voortplanten. De larven (emelten) eten graswortels en worden zelf vooral door spreeuwen gegeten. #NatuurStruûnen #Texel

Storharkrankar i släktet Tipula är svårbestämda och många arter är rätt okända. Vi har ett 90-tal i Sverige. Detta är Tipula confusa. Dess vingteckning är tydlig och gör arten mer lättbestämd
