This online marketing push is an odd little hat tip to the 90s, when the Patagonian toothfish was rebranded "Chilean sea bass" to make it sound more appetizing.

What we call things matters. Give something a new identity and you can make a haul. When the "Patagonian Toothfish" was renamed "Chilean Sea Bass" it opened up a whole new market. Because who wants to eat a Pantagonian toothfish? 'Soup' is old school. 'Water-based food' sounds almost intellectual.

To make it sound tastier they should invent a euphemistic name for it, like “Chilean sea bass” is actually Patagonian toothfish. Chippies used to sell “rock salmon” which was actually dogfish, maybe revive that.
