tldr Maimonides: God has no body, emotions, etc. bc God is infinite; all the human talk in Torah is metaphor, duh.

(Exodus 31:18), "written with the finger of God" (ibid.), "the hand of the Lord" (Exodus 9:3), "the eyes of
the Lord" (Genesis 38:7), "the ears of the Lord" (Numbers 11:1), et cetera? These phrases are in line with the
level of understanding of people, who can only comprehend physical existence, and the Torah speaks in the
language of human beings. All examples of this nature are merely attributory (nicknames, shorthand). For
example, when it says, "If I whet My glittering sword" (Deut. 32:41)- does God really have a sword and does
God really kill with one?! Such phrases are figurative. Evidence for this is that one prophet saw God as
wearing garments as white as snow, whereas another prophet saw God as wearing crimsoned garments from
Bozrah. Moses our teacher himself saw, at the time of the splitting of the Red Sea, God as a war-waging
warrior, but at Sinai as a shaliach tzibbur (prayer leader) to show him the order of prayer. This shows that
God has no form or shape [because God appears differently to different people], but rather that everything
[regarding God's appearance] is according to the prophetic vision and what [that prophet] sees. The truth of
the matter is that is beyond human intellect to investigate or comprehend [the nature of God's existence,] as
it is written, (Job 11:7) "Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the purpose of the
Almighty?" (Maimonedes, 12th c., Hilchot Yesodei HaTorah, 1:9)
When particular symbols for God become deeply established and familiar, they lose their transparency as
symbols and come to be seen as descriptions of God that provide unique access to the nature of divine
reality. Though this can happen with any much-used symbol, the image of God as male seems especially to
