Adventures in home ownership continue. Last weekend we learned that our laundry drain was illegal and not working and needs to be replaced with a pump. Gonna be pricey. This week planned work on our slightly sloped flat roof began. Old fire damage was discovered under 2 layers of torchdown!

The folks we bought our home from about 8 years ago “replaced the roof.” Turns out they slapped another torchdown layer with weird cuts and so yeah. We just had TWO removed & replaced. Plus the brickwork mortar design on the chimney was… ill-conceived. Chimney also rebuilt. Hoping next year is dull.

I am pretty sure it's not the torchdown that is key, but what type of structures you would normally find torchdown on, modern homes and apartments without the typical detached single family eaves and attic space.

There's a guy in my neighborhood who iirc correctly works for JPL who has been doing drone surveys of Altadena collecting data on what survived. So far the one thing that stood out was that torchdown roofs seemed to be disproportionately represented. He couldn't understand why. /
