Dinovember 2026 #3 - Ceratopsidae

Today's focus is the Ceratopsidae, and as a result we have Torosaurus, the owner of the largest skull of any land animal. And this old male is furiously displaying it to a possible unseen threat.

Thank you, Andy! I apologize for what I've done to Torosaurus in the book, but was also glad to bring that dinosaur in. I'm so glad you've enjoyed it.

She’s 40 feet long.

She weighs nine tons.

Her bite crushes bone.

And she’s coming to your bookshelf.

Portrait of Torosaurus alongside a (proto-)Heliconia plant. I found out after doodling this that Heliconia is thought to date back to the Eocene, but who knows, maybe they had ancestors in the Late Cretaceous when Torosaurus was around. #dinosaur #prehistoric #paleoart #art

Only two species remain valid to this day, both designated by Marsh. There was also debate on whether Torosaurus and Triceratops were possibly the same animal just at different ages of development, but much of that debate fell through.

Its very funny to me that the Reality Fracture opposite of T-Rex is Torosaurus.
Also this Ghalta is going to wreck house in my Doran deck.

Shout out to the Tate Geological Museum in Casper. Had some time to kill and they have a lot of neat fossils.

Speaking of teaching, the Academy's education department has been the public face of the museum through thick and thin, running programs like the yearly science camps and Women in Natural Sciences (WINS), that provides after-school science enrichment to high school-aged girls in the Philly area.

Chilesaurus: no one should ever trust you with directions ever

Maip: you romanticize some of the darker things of life

Protoceratops: you’re the definition of “if i’m going down, i’m taking you with me.”

Torosaurus: you have very little patience for stupidity and you will make people cry

I guess I might as well show the next brute of the Hell Creek Formation, the Torosaurus, 30 long, 4 to 8 tons, and known for having one of the largest heads of all land animals

Do you think she wants a beer?? (Torosaurus)

Is that a real model or something made up by the dream? It does remind me of how Torosaurus was once proposed to simply be mature Triceratops specimens.

You know what one of my childhood memories is? Co-writing a nonsensical, two-paragraph story with my dad about "a little cuddly Torosaurus" (I think he was being a little facetious but went along anyway) and then him drawing weird one-eyed creatures climbing around the edges of the paper.
The Guardian story on AI begins with a moving anecdote about how this guy's daughter wanted him to make up a story with her, so he got Chat GPT to do it. What a fond memory that will be for her. Such family bonding.

New labels for each skeleton have far less text on them, which I think is appropriate for the overwhelming majoring of the people visiting this museum. Wordy text panels can deter people from even trying to read them! New labels are white, old ones (taken on a previous visit) are orange and grey.
