Nuoren valkopukuisen naisen muotokuva (Portrait of a Young Woman in White) by Torsten Wasastjerna (Finnish) - Oil on canvas / 1893 - Finnish National Gallery (Helsinki, Finland) #womeninart #TorstenWasastjerna #portrait #womensart #art #painting #finnish #finnishnationalgallery #tights #leggings
A young woman with long natural brown hair and rosy cheeks sits with her right leg tucked under her left leg on a white sheet looking at us with an introspective expression in a lifelike portrait. Wearing an all white dress with low ruffled collar and cuffs, she holds a small bouquet of pink and red flowers, contrasting her black leggings and dark brown above-the-ankle boots. Wasastjerna started his studies in 1883 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki under Adolf von Becker, spent 1885 – 1888 in Düsseldorf and after that four winters in Paris. During his stay in Paris he painted a number of paintings distinguished by their use of color with clear impressionist influences. With the rise of symbolism in the 1890s, Wasastjerna started painting bigger works, often focused on fairy tale motifs. His later output included prints, pastels and a number of portraits such as this one. He also turned his hand to writing, with a collection of poems, a play, and even a political book entitled Art’s Friends and Enemies (1902).
