My second earliest exuvia of Southern Hawker in my Devon pond today. Not too surprising given other early emerging dragonflies in recent days. @britishdragonflies.bsky.social. Note the eyes smaller than in Emperor, which is busy emerging currently. White strands are the linings of the tracheae.

I imagine you know about the Russian Megagrant awarded to lethal fraud and now imprisoned Paolo Macchiarini? The grant was for transplanting plastic tracheae magically brought to life by stem cell glop. Swedish TV made a documentary about how all the patients died. Won an award too.

Don't you be trying to guilt me or trip me up... You know as well as I do that crickets have a complicated respiratory process involving spiracles, tracheae and that they diffuse oxygen into their bodies.

The top image features a pink diagram of a fictional set of avian lungs. Blue arrows point to air flow down the trachea to the posterior air sacs, then the lungs, the anterior air sacs and back out the trachea. This unidirectional flow prevents air mixing and increases respiration efficiency, as seen in nature with birds. Gas exchange occurs in the parabronchi labelled in yellow. The middle image features a fictional ‘accessory lung’ that has separate inhalant and exhalant tracheae. These are extra organs bioengineered into kaiju to use in addition to their main ‘avian’ systems. The bottom image features a fictional ‘accessory turbine’ lung. Gray synthetic, osseous turbines create a constant flow of air without needing to use respiratory muscles. The Great Worms rely entirely on modified turbine systems for pulmonary respiration. (Side note: all of Nyreen’s kaiju utilize photosynthesis to supplement their oxygen, using either green or red chlorophyll.)
