TrackWeight est un projet disponible sur GitHub permettant de transformer le trackpad de votre MacBook en balance ! C’est un joli projet d’été initié par Krish Shah. La vidéo montre le développeur poser une boite de complément alimentaire sur le trackpad de son MacBook Pro, puis sur une petite balance. Les résultats sont très proches : 180 grammes sur l’écran du MacBook, contre 182 grammes sur l’appareil spécialisé. Si ce projet a été rendu possible, c’est grâce au trackpad du MacBook qui n’est pas un trackpad traditionnel, mais qui dispose d’un capteur de pression avec retour haptique. Cela n’a pas été toutefois une promenade de santé pour le développeur qui a dû s’appuyer sur une API privée d’Apple pour mettre au point son application. De ce fait, elle ne sera jamais accessible sur le Mac App Store. TrackWeight s’appuie sur le projet open-source Open Multi-Touch Support library. Il est possible de télécharger son code source sur GitHub et de le compiler sur Xcode. L’iPhone 6s servait également de balance Aussi intéressant soit ce projet, ce n’est pas tout à fait une première. Il y a une petite dizaine d’années, des petits malins avaient profité des capteurs de pression des écrans des iPhone 6s pour mettre au point une fonction similaire. Dans un premier temps, le concept avait été développé en l’espace de quelques jours. Puis certains avaient essayé de soumettre l’application sur l’App Store. Pour des raisons de sécurité, Apple avait systématiquement refusé ce type d’applications. Toutefois, l’une d’elles avait passé les mailles du filet. Asaf Avidan Antonir avait développé un clone gratuit de Flappy Bird qui contenait une option Entrainement dans laquelle se cachait une balance. ## New 'TrackWeight' App Makes a MacBook Trackpad Weigh Stuff A fresh app made by fans, named TrackWeight, smartly turns the Force Touch trackpad on new MacBook laptops into a working weight scale. The steps are easy: you open the app and put an item on the trackpad to find out how heavy it is. ### How It Runs The app taps into the trackpad's force stats using the Open Multi-Touch Support tech, which shows off hidden parts of the tool. The built-in Force Touch bits feel how hard an item pushes, and the app changes this force info into a weight in grams. ### Tests and How Right It Is The makers checked how right the app is by matching its numbers to a normal scale. They put a MacBook on the scale, set it to zero, and then put known heavy items on the trackpad. The numbers from the TrackWeight app matched the scale's, proving the trackpad can really act as a tiny scale. ### Big Limits and Needs While cool, the TrackWeight app has some key rules and limits: * It works with macOS 13.0 or newer. * The App Sandbox, a usual macOS safe thing, has to be off for the app to run. * To get a weight, your finger has to stay on the trackpad, which might change how right it is. * The app doesn't work for all things. Metal stuff, for one, can mess with the bits, and it's best to weigh them on some paper. ### Where to Get It The code for the TrackWeight work is out there for all on GitHub if you want to check how it was made.
