#Trad-Jazz
he was really into trad jazz, but maybe a decade ago my mother casually says “Oh, he loved Thelonious Monk.” My eyes widened & i said essentially “you’ve waited THIS long to tell me?” as if she were keeping some family secret from me.

And it's a great reminder that contemporaneous definers of the 'Jazz Age' really meant the full arrival of Tin Pan Alley and significantly more peppy society dance orchestras like Whiteman's, not the 'hot' (ie Black) jazz we came to think of it as post swing/trad revival

Finally decided to watch the infamous (for its depth) Ken burns jazz history series, two episodes and three hours in and we’re still at ragtime/trad.

This isn’t a series for people with a passing interest that’s for sure

Death metal band plays unlikely Sunday afternoon gig when the regular trad jazz combo has to pull out.

Listened to Hepcat - Right on Time (1998). Glorious old school Jamaican style ska mixed with jazz. Seriously some of the best trad ska sounds

christian mcbride (trad jazz revival guy) has a new funky contemporary jazz project and I’m really excited for oldheads to clutch their pearls about him “””selling out“””

You could add skiffle's parent, trad jazz (which Eric Hobsbawm once described as the only genre of jazz invented and played solely by white people).

Love seeing all of you doing this! Should be music out everywhere!
I'm doing 2 big band gigs in the next week (unusual for me) Plus playing Trad jazz tonight & show later in the week. A slight change from the usual rock saxophone gigs! 😄

Been thinking about this: haven’t you missed Trad Jazz? Massive briefly at the turn of the 50s/60s and now a real niche interest.

(Skiffle started within the Trad jazz movement I think. Could be wrong.)

Just “The 1950s”, I think. Don’t forget, for a while there the most credible thing around was Trad Jazz.

I’m generally of this opinion too, but as a psych/folk-rock/late 60s-early 70s SSW fan, I refuse to sit through the ubiquitous zany old time/trad jazz/music hall pastiche, phoned in 12 bar album filler or misguided stab at reggae, which plague so many records I otherwise love.
While I'm getting things off my chest... lots of talk about 'albums with no skips'. I get the sentiment, but it says a lot about patience and music appreciation. When I spent all my money on an LP I dragged my ears through every track. Because that is how albums work. Skipping tracks is kinda sad.

Music genres usually mutate or blend into another: gospel, soul, funk. Opera style mainstream music and trad jazz are two that didn’t make it. The Beatles started as a skiffle band. Punk lasted five minutes but its cultural significance was huge. Country has done its own thing.
