a huge reason the auto industry cannot hire all the mechanics they need is lack of access to the technical education anyone needs to become an automotive technician! cost of this education & failure by corporations to train workers - also a huge factor.

i think unionization of the PMC has upsides and downsides, there are principles for tradeswork that i think don’t map easily to, like, knowledge work (or office work, if you prefer), but as the author notes, if the unions are the only ones promising improvements, people are going to choose unions

from as soon as they can think about careers, practical engineering or tradeswork should be an option, and not a denigrated one either.

I'm in Denver, so not exactly the same, but finding non-PE tradeswork has become a nightmare. Every van has an AI logo wrap, prices have skyrocketed 🫠 had to get nasty w a place that switched ownership in the middle of fulfillment of a new garage door last year 😵💫

less about that and more about the way seniority, layoffs, etc. are handled, which i think has meaningful differences in tradeswork than in white collar/office/PMC work

I never want to like, compare jobs or w/e, but despite that fact that countless people told me growing up that tradeswork was a "real job" and other people are just afraid of hard work, working in construction has been like, the easiest work of my life.

Funnily enough, Johnny. Tradeswork was the only thing, up to that point in my life, that I was so bad at that it required my total attention. I got yelled at every single day by Greatest Generation Greek and Italian immigrants for the first year. Made it all the more special when I got some skill

UBI definitely. Unions and guilds are both very important. Guilds will become more so as we switch to switch to independent tradeswork. Minimum wage laws are an unhealthy attempted fix for the failure of not having UBI. They place the burden of supporting society on the wrong party.

They were a little angry, because they they felt I stole it, but we worked things out. The didn't want the public to have access to certain genuinely dangerous information, so I simply made a deal to trade those books for more up to date medical, agricultural, and tradeswork books.

It's incredible. The multicolor marble cladding is visually perfect. I spent hours looking for flaws; an off pattern termination, a fudged size on a panel to compensate, etc but could not find one. It's a startling tradeswork achievement
