Some texts describe individuals who changed gender or embodied mixed traits, especially in sacred contexts. This shows that gender diversity has been recorded for over 4,000 years!” and “7th Cent AD: Across early Islamic societies, there are records of Mukhannathun—people assigned male at birth who expressed femininity or occupied gender-nonconforming roles, particularly in music and court life. Any children in that family would belong to her family line, even if she wasn’t the biological parent. This practice was rooted in pre-colonial Nigerian history, and shows the fluidity of sex and gender roles that have been taken on throughout history.” and “18th-20th Cent AD: Among the Dagaaba people of West Africa, spiritual healers and diviners - often called to their roles by ancestral spirits - could embody blended masculine and feminine qualities to effectively mediate between the physical and spiritual worlds. Although they faced suppression during the 19th-century colonial era, their role continues today with a strong resurgence in embracing the history of the Māhū, including efforts to restore their stories, such as the healing stones in Waikīkī.” and “Pre-1st Cent BC - 21st Cent AD: In Zapotec communities in Oaxaca, Mexico, Muxes are people assigned male at birth who take on roles associated with women or a distinct third gender.
