This is a "mumble tub" or mercury delay-line computer memory unit. It sends an audio pulse through a tube of heated mercury metal, preserving data as analogue waveforms. The transducers were in human audio range, so it was said these sounded like whispering or mumbling people when in operation

actually, true. I've begun hosting on whales lately. when you request something from my site, a network of deep sea transducers pings a specific beluga (Little Joe IV) in the Bering Sea. Little Joe whistles the requested resource back to the transducers at around 9hz, but only when he feels like it

Yep. One of the first piezoelectric materials discovered. Besides sonar it was the most common material used for ultrasonic transducers for a long time. Nowadays we have fancy titanate ceramics and can choose optimial materials for sending or receiving, but we stand on the shoulders of quartz haha
