Terrific read it is too! Particular fan here of cheaper options (and greater frequency) on the Tranzalpine and Coastal Explorer. Well, and the Southerner!
You could do the above for less than the RoNS north of Warkworth. I have a more ambitious wishlist—see last chapter of Can't Get There from Here—but this is where we should be *starting*: it rightly ought to be seen as basic for functional transport, not pie in the sky or subject to partisan whim

We have 3 boys and a daughter-in-law.
31 (ish), 24 and 21.
Trying to get them all together is hard.
Looking at doing 6 days in NZ to do the Tranzalpine later this year after Mrs K has recovered. Should be fun.

Now that Intercity has started a competing Chch-Greymouth bus service, I hope that Kiwirail might drop their steep ticket prices to stay competitive, and more people will get to enjoy this amazing trip!

(Side note, the Addington Station platform is a tad too short for the modern Tranzalpine)
