Trichaptum sp. growing on pine in Oaxaca, Mexico. Trichaptum looks like a polypore, but it's actually in the Hymenochaetales order, along with Phellinus and Rickenella!

Love these lil surprise beauties. A bit bland from above but then, those pores! Violet tooths are often confused with turkey tail, but turkey tail never has pores this pretty.

Fairy Pins - Phaeocalicium polyporaeum
The easiest stubble of all to find. As long as you have Trichaptum brackets nearby you probably have this other fungus nearby too.

Here is a longer view of the interesting logs I found in February.
March 4, 2026 at 1:19 AM
This pretty little Trichaptum had throughly colonized this massive fallen Fagus grandifolia. There are actually several Trichaptum species that can be difficult to differentiate based on macro morphology, but sequencing confirmed that this is Trichaptum biforme.

Found an interesting old log at the park on Tuesday. The next day we had 6 inches of snow, double what was forecasted.

Correction!! My previous Turkey Tail Tuesday post appears to be incorrect and misidentifies Trichaptum biforme, violet-pored bracket fungus! I love how much I am learning from this discussion!! #correction #pnwfungi #fungifriends #trichaptum #mushroomphoto
Interesting! And neither of my PNW fungi books list any Trichaptum varieties in the region, though the one mention of Trichaptum in either book refers to it as being similar to Trametes.
So, here’s another shot that shows more of this specimen and a bit of underside view, though lacking detail.
