Snippet from a short story, "The Stairs of Tulamanta,"by L.L. Stephens. The story is set in the Triempery universe before the events of the Triempery Revelations book series. This snip shows Legon as a child with his brothers, being prepared to audition to be a companion to young Dorilian Sordaneon. “Getting knocked down is no shame so long as you get back up to keep fighting.” Oedan continued to grimace at the garments the clothier’s assistants packed away. The expense of these purchases promised that the brothers’ wardrobes would get less coin this season. To Legon he said, “Make a good impression, if you can. Don’t give Father reason to be angry about not having made impressive sons when he comes back from Askorras.” “We don’t need him bringing back any fancy ideas,” urged Belleos. “Better yet,” sniggered Attos, the third-born, “don’t make it so Father has to bring you back.” Legon’s brothers laughed and punched arms, issuing advice on how Legon should present himself along with further warnings about not offending anyone by putting on airs. It was good advice, The youngest son of a man who ruled a region as poor as Anit-Rebir had nothing to put on airs about except a few goats.

The Triempery domains speak Stauba, as do the elite of other lands.
Khelds have their own language which almost no one else speaks.

In this snip, Marc Frederick observes the Rill god machine in motion and afterward confronts a formidable adversary who voices a complaint. Thrum. A deep reverberation sounded across the city, at a distance but imminent. Looking up, Marc Frederick watched a charys appear. The vessel’s immense mass effortlessly glided between shape-shifting arches before it came to a stop, suspended above the city like a sword in mid thrust. No matter how many times he saw the Rill in motion, he never quite got used to it. Its size, for one thing, obliterated human scale. He watched the rapid ascent of cargo elevators up the side of the mount, heading from the docks toward the platform. One of his guards interrupted, indicating a visitor important enough to merit his attention. He bit back a curse. For three months, he had avoided Chyralane, talking with her only briefly the night of the cartel’s Heptacentennial. Now she had pinned him, so any refusal on his part would be public. “You’ve been elusive,” she complained. Her cosmetician had done outstanding work, and her eyes glittered like topazes beneath amethyst-beaded brows. “I gave you information, and you gave me promises. So tell me why that boy is still free.” “I never agreed to deliver him to you—or anyone. And he has not set foot out of Essera in five months.” He was glad they were alone, with only bales and boxes and the Rill overhead, a silent witness.

There are no foxes -- indeed, no vertebrates at all except for the nomari -- in NOMARA. So I am using a Triempery book, THE SECOND STONE, for "fox." Because the Triempery does have foxes.

Indeed, his loyalty is so firmly placed, he insists on being party to the delegation tomorrow.” “Pallas?” Both Levyathan and Arne’s expressions turned incredulous. The applause of the crowd for the acrobats briefly caught their attention. Then Levyathan laughed softly in an undertone. “He probably wants to ensure that any terms are set as near as possible to the Halia’s.” “We got a few like that ourselves,” Arne confided. “We call ’em Stefanites.” One of their own delegates, a Stefanite, glared at him, though his Stauba was not quite excellent enough to confirm any slight.

In this snip Dorilian Sordaneon, Hierarch of Sordan and the highest person any other person is ever likely to have met, confronts angry Kheld chieftain Nalf, who remembers Dorilian from Amallar, where Dorilian was in disguise. “I think you’ve embarrassed yourself enough for one day.” “Embarrassed myself?” Nalf growled. “For laying out the truth?” Dorilian leaned forward and locked gazes with the infuriated Kheld. “Truth? You want to know who I am and where I’ve been? Do you really? Then reckon this: Askyllon is but a pebble in my boot, Stauberg a pile of rocks beside my road. I have been places no Kheld has ever seen, Nalf Thegn, and maybe no Kheld ever will. Places so high they take the breath away. Places you would set foot upon and die, set hand into and turn to stone, set eye on and go blind. Places where blood builds mighty edifices in an instant and corpses hold the key to the city.” The time had truly come for him to go. He stood from the table. “And now, I regret that I must take my leave.” “Is that so! Is that so?” Nalf Rhys thundered at the condescension. “So high I would choke on it, you say? Any Kheld would choke on your dust? Well, if you’re that gods-damned high, then why the hell are you here?”

The attack exploded suddenly upon the field. Virulent green fire, the hiss of expanding gases and altered elements. The burst expanded toward the front ranks of Sordan’s horse regiments as they charged toward the standing enemy. Now, at last, Dorilian and Nammuor would engage. Drawing a deep breath, Dorilian stretched both hands toward Nammuor’s seething viridescence. Even here, beneath this forgotten plain, the Rill lurked like a subterranean beast. Hidden. Powerful. As he had demonstrated at Stauberg, Dorilian did not need an active node to summon forth his Entity’s latent power. While he wore the Coronal and Derlon’s Armor, while the Rill Stone encircled his finger, Dorilian’s very body could be an enhancer. He could be, and would be, a living device. He let the Rill’s energy fill his skin.
