This is my best New York Eldredgeops from the Devonian Windom Shale. It's enrolled, which is a defensive position. The soft tissue legs and antenna could hide inside the hard shell if it was attacked or buried in a storm event, similar to a modern day pillbug or roly-poly.

The New York Eldredgeops are typically jet black color.

The ones from Ohio are more chocolate brown. The ones from Oklahoma are caramel color.

Probably not very tasty though. 😁

#TrilobiteTuesday This beautiful specimen of Ditymopgyge sp. is among the very last of the magnificent trilobite dynasty which survived the whole of the Paleozoic Era, only to succumb, as did most of life on earth, during the "Great Dying" at the end of the Permian Period.

For #TrilobiteTuesday, an illustration of the types of traces made by a trilobite resting underneath sediment, burrowing, & walking on a surface, with ichnogenera assigned to each trace fossil. Seen at the Penha Garcia Ichnological Park, a UNESCO Global Geopark in Portugal. 🧪🪨🐾

Welcome back to #TrilobiteTuesday

Here is a massive pygidium from an undescribed Scutellid trilobite from the Lower Devonian rocks of Morocco. This would have been a monster trilobite if it was complete. The tail alone is about 3 inches across!

A friend of mine also found this trilobite fossil. It’s over 400 million years old and still clearly preserved.

Lovely!

Trilobite found by a friend near Alnif, Morocco.

This one is preserved with clear segmentation and typical body shape. I used the macro mode on my phone camera to capture the details.

A 40 mm Asaphiscus wheeleri trilobite from the Cambrian Wheeler Shale of Utah. This specimen shows signs of predation on the left. The pygidium (tail) and one pleura (rib) were damaged and healed.

There is also a 5 mm Elrathia kingii at the bottom right.

Another trilobite hides behind Door 16 of the Fossil Advent Calendar for #TrilobiteTuesday! Olenellus clarki lived around 512 million years ago during the Cambrian period, with this example found in California, USA.

Another #TrilobiteTuesday on the Fossil Advent Calendar means another trilobite behind door 9. This is a curious example I spotted at the museum, I have not been able to find much information about it, giving me yet another reason to go back for a visit!

Day 2 of the Fossil Advent Calendar also falls on #TrilobiteTuesday, and luckily for us that’s exactly what we have behind Door 2! Psychopyge elegans was a trilobite from the Devonian Period, and this example was found in Morocco.
