The Trimates work was invaluable

My niece works for a Zoo and I continue to support their much needed work and efforts. We should thank the Trimates for the improvements and advancement in Animal research around the world.

Today, we're also honouring Dr. Biruté Galdikas – a scientist and educator, a conservationist, and an advocate for the orangutan.

Biruté and Dr. Jane, together with Dian Fossey, were once known as Louis Leakey's "trimates." These three women redefined humanity’s relationship with the natural world.

I've finally read books by all 3 of The Trimates and all I can say is wow

From describing Homo habilis alongside Phillip Tobias and John Napier in 1964 to instigating long-term primatological research by supporting Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birutė Galdikas ("The Trimates"), Louis expanded the boundaries of how we study human evolution.

Alison Ashbury wrote a particularly moving obituary in memory of Dr Birutė Galdikas.

One of the “Trimates”, she transformed our understanding of orangutans through a lifetime of fieldwork and conservation. Her legacy lives on in the forests she fought to protect and in the generations she inspired.

Biruté Mary Galdikas, born 10 May 1946, died 24 March 2026. #Orangutans #Trimates 🦧💔 Recruited by Louis Leakey alongside Jane Goodall (chimpanzees) and Dian Fossey (mountain gorillas), she contributed to a broader understanding of primates as behaviorally complex and evolutionarily significant. #RIP

Off-stream item grinding in Phantasy Star II went well! Shir grabbed ~5 Star Mist (full party heal), 3 Moon Dew (single revive), and a ton of Trimates (single heal).

The only other progression I did off-stream was returning to the Esper Mansion. Runup to the final boss will be on 05/13's stream!

oh. that's all of the Trimates gone, now.

Perhaps the least well-known of the “trimates”, Dr. Biruté Galdikas made incredible strides in furthering our knowledge of orangutans. Another amazing animal advocate lost on the heels of the loss of Dr. Jane Goodall, but no doubt she inspired others to continue her work

One of Leakey’s “trimates”, she worried about what would become of the orangutans.

I’d like to think there are those who will carry on her work.
Birutė Galdikas, alongside Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey, transformed the study of apes. Their work in remote forests reshaped who could be a scientist and helped spark global efforts to save great apes. Galdikas died March 24, 2026.

With Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey, Galdikas changed the face of science and opened the world’s eyes to how similar humans are to orangutans and other primates.

Somehow missed the news of the recent passing of Birute Galdikas, the last surviving member of the Trimates. From what I've read, she could be a difficult person at times, but sometimes it takes difficult people to do difficult things. And what she accomplished was extraordinary.
