Always a pleasure to see a Tripos sp. dinoflagellate in one of my samples. I don’t see them too often so when I spot one I do get a little excited!

Mathematician Charlotte Angas Scott was born 168 years ago today. Known mainly for her feat of achieving 8th Wrangler in the 1880 Tripos Exam, she should be equally remembered for her years of building foundational mathematical institutions in the United States.

The Englishwoman in America: Charlotte Angas Scott and the Development of American Mathematics
In 1885, when you heard the term ‘mathematical epicentre’ one of the last places that would have been brought to mind was the United States. Sure, it had a handful of locally distinguished minds to it...

I always enjoyed that myth that Cambridge let his bodyguards do Tripos as they’d say in on all his tutorials etc and that they got 2:1s where he got a 3rd

Today we celebrate the birthday of two important mathematicians - Tripos trailblazer, algebraic geometrist, and Bryn Mawr legend Charlotte Angas Scott (born 1858) and polytope pioneer Alicia Boole Stott (born 1860)!

In 1890, Fawcett became the first woman to obtain the top score in the Cambridge Mathematical Tripos exam, but since she could not receive a degree from Cambridge due to being a woman, she could not be the senior wrangler.

I have waited 3 YEARS to see one of these!! I’m wondering if this is Tripos longipes? I’d love your thoughts. Including apical horn it is 194 um long, and NOT including hypothecal horns it’s 53 um wide. Southern North Sea. Image is stacked. I’m so happy to have finally seen one! 🦑

Following Fawcett's achievement in the Tripos, she won the Marion Kennedy scholarship at Cambridge through which she conducted research in fluid dynamics. Her published papers include "Note on the Motion of Solids in a Liquid".

I did my theology tripos via Clare Cambridge and if I’m honest I’ve never felt all that much of a connection to the college; I didn’t spend much time there except in chapel as I lived at Westcott. But I am pleased that it gives me a connection with one of its finest graduates, David Attenborough.

categories of stigmatized failure. School and examination systems pretty much designed to traumatize a certai proportion. E.g. history of Cambridge math tripos full of stories of breakdowns, and this was seen as a feature, a way of selecting the toughest.

From a large, local, and unusual, bloom of the dinoflagellate Tripos muelleri in 2023. I trapped some cells in agar microwells to see if I could catch them dividing in a long timelapse. Those wells are 250 microns in diameter: the cells are large! #protistaday #protistsonsky #marinelife

Found out in #MathsToday that Cambridge have announced that they will now use both the TMUA *and* STEP for entry to the Mathematical Tripos from 2027 which follows Oxford’s decision to swap MAT for TMUA last month. #ALevelMaths teachers take note, source here: www.christs.cam.ac.uk/study-here/u...

Mathematician Ada Isabel Maddison was born 157 years ago today. In 1892 she took the Tripos and would have been 27th Wrangler, but on account of her gender she was not given the degree she had earned. She spent 3 decades at Bryn Mawr as a teacher and admin, retiring in 1926.

I've posted this before, but my Dad's O-Level Latin teacher HATED Enoch Powell, but for the unorthodox reason that they'd been in the same year at Cambridge, and Powell's brilliant performance bested him in Tripos, when he'd have comfortably come top in any other year. Resented him for it massively.

She got first place in her first-year examinations at Queen's in 1884, but the university would not award the prize to a woman.

She studied maths at Cambridge from 1886 to 1889 and passed the Tripos but was not awarded a degree, because Cambridge did not award degrees to women until 1928.
