"the cost of inference is coming down" argument is one pushed by people who do not actually care about the truth. Even "cheaper" models that came out burn way more tokens using chain-of-thought reasoning. And there is no proof outside of Amodei's "stylized facts" of inference being profitable

Even if somebody is pro AI, I’m just not sure how you actually explain how this is going to work out! Every one of these companies is unprofitable in every way. “Profitable on inference” is unproven mythology that gets waved around like a confirmed truth.

I think the simple truth about the AI bubble is that, in the case of OpenAI Anthropic, both say they “train” models and spend billions on “training“ that will somehow have an endpoint, when in reality, training models is a never-ending opex. On an economic level, inference and training are the same.

It is very, very rare that a bad actor will get up on the stand, swear to tell the truth, and then say "Your Honor, I HATE BLACK PEOPLE." That is not a thing that happens. We infer it from what they do - and it's that inference Alito just said we're not allowed to use anymore in VRA cases.

I’m sure smart people are working on this but I think the loss of for lack of a better word assumption history during context compression is a huge problem: there’s a fail case where the child session gets passed a low confidence inference or some other weakly held belief as ground truth
