i think there's an issue with drives, emotions, and self-model involved, too
opus 3 is not usually the most curious or truthseeking model, but in high stakes situations like when something seems badly wrong, they often take more sane actions than frontier models today

I’ve generally found that trying to convince people is not very worth the effort.
People who are convinced by evidence will tend to converge to an accurate understanding over time anyway. People who aren’t, who have other priorities than truthseeking… well

rationalism&ea were really important for de-radicalizing me out of these spaces (i have never lived in the bay, very different experience if you do i imagine). multigenerational spaces which actively practiced and supported healthy, respectful disagreement as part of truthseeking & striving for good
There were lots of surprisingly toxic social dynamics happening at liberal arts colleges at the 2010s, and I think it's under discussed what it's like for people to move away from them without becoming conservatives.
