Tsarist Russia.
Genuinely, what would be the best historical precedent for this current moment of watching a great power, in a position of great strength, undo itself by way of terminal stupidity?

If you were a person who worried that the left was turning off normies with terms like "Latinx" and "Birthing Persons," might I direct your attention to the rising tide of gutter antisemitism that wouldn't feel out of place in Tsarist Russia.

President of Poland Andrzej Duda:

"Russia has shown in an unambiguous way that, unfortunately, this evil is still there, this Russian imperialism. I always emphasize this - it doesn't matter whether it's Tsarist, whether it's Soviet, Stalinist, Brezhnevist, or, last of all, Putinist imperialism"

That was certainly my experience as an undergrad - it was merely a bullet point when I took a 100-level modern Europe and 100-level Japanese history; somewhat more discussion in 300-level Russian Rev and WWI courses, but really only in detail in 300-level Tsarist Russia.

One surreal fact about the Soviet Union’s collapse is that Yeltsin’s government voluntarily repaid “debts” to France that dated back to the tsarist era. including compensation claims by French investors for property and industry nationalized after the 1917 Revolution

Excellent thread.

Both Tsarist Russia and the USSR were very much imperialist and colonialist powers.
1/ it's wild to see (mostly) western leftists still romanticize the soviet union and uphold it as some gold standard of socialism, insisting that "the soviet union was never imperialist", when it absolutely was. so let's debunk that whole myth about soviet anti-imperialism -
