Ornate scalloped arches, inspired by mediaeval Georgian church architecture and Islamic-influenced stone carving. One of my favourite parts of this old miner's sanatorium in Tskaltubo, Georgia.

Spells in the Dust

Inside one of Tskaltubo’s abandoned sanatoriums, a forgotten book on "Magical Incantations" rests undisturbed on a table.

A moody interior shot of a dim, decaying room inside an abandoned Soviet-era building in Tskaltubo. In the foreground, a worn wooden table covered in dirt and debris holds a blue Russian book titled "Magical Incantations" (Магические заговоры). In the background, daylight filters through sheer white lace curtains, reflecting softly in a tall, dusty mirror resting on a fabric-covered chair.

No, there are more “functional but not pretty” separate baths (separated by a half-wall, kind of like big stalls) with the workers walking through a corridor at the feet of the baths and doing the hydro massages and other therapies. This page explains it best: www.sanatoriums.com/en/tskaltubo...

The vibe is very much something between waiting for the doctor in some soviet place vs The Grand Budapest Hotel. Same goes for the treatments. No english, hand gestures only, but friendly :) and there seem lots of websites but very confusing re who owns what: www.sanatoriums.com/en/tskaltubo...

This is where I stayed last night 🖤 (For real, its called Legends Tskaltubo Spa Resort, and the only sanatorium still operating. They are slowly renovating it and it has a lovely vibe!)

Just reached Tskaltubo, only staying for a night, but went out exploring the old abandoned sanatoriums in the companionship of a very sweet (they all are) stray dog, and dad, who got a go at the camera. What an absolutely fascinating town!! Soon these places will be gone :(
