meet the masquereidel!

it's a mob made of tumbaga and stone bricks, found mostly in jungle temples.

It attempts to mimic the behavior of other mobs in order to attack the player. It spins its mask to show the player the face of the mob it’s imitating.

One of the most fascinating stories, completely new to me, was that of gold-plating. In particular, I enjoyed learning about the remarkable chemistry performed by the Inca in South America to create golden objects from 'tumbaga' using selective redox chemistry. #DecolonisingChemistry

Never had heard of “Tumbaga“!
“Tumbaga is the name given by Spanish Conquistadors for a non-specific alloy of gold and copper…
The term is a borrowing from the Tagalog “tumbaga”...
Tumbaga was widely used by the pre-Columbian cultures of Central and South America to make religious objects“

every friend group has that one guy who claims not to know the place in the lonely plains in uttermost amazonia where the fabled lost city of Z lies buried, and yet always shows up to the function with his mediocre fit still sweet with the sacred odor of a tumbaga pectoral

Oh, I took your all-caps as sarcasm!

Yeah, no, I just wiki-ed "tumbaga" and the definition seems believable?

Tumbaga is a relatively common alloy of copper, silver & gold, typically containing low amounts of gold. To create 'gold' objects, the Inca cast the alloy into the desired shape then burned it. This oxidised the copper & silver, but the redox potential of the gold means it remains in metallic form.

Placing the oxidised object in a pickling bath of acidic plant juices causes the copper and silver oxides to dissolve, leaving a golden surface, that could be polished up, to make the object appear as if it was pure gold. This allowed relatively low-cost production of decorative 'gold' objects.

It’s cast from tumbaga, a gold-copper alloy, which is why it has a somewhat pale pinkish cast in person.

In a nice reminder about how much earlier this world was Global than we realize, apparently "tumbaga" was a word the Spanish borrowed from Tagalog/Malay.

But gold and copper were available in rivers and along the Great Lakes shore in lumps, and Mesoamericans liked them best as an alloy called tumbaga which apparently not only had a nice ruddy color but *smelled good*

"You sound like Siduri."
"She's worring 'bout you."
"I don't need it."
"And when you'll need it? When you can't stand in your feet?" he don't answer. "When you don't have any potion in that magic gate of yours?"
