Tailwind CSS, 122nd Pass: The Only New Feature Came With Instructions That Break Your Other CSS
Day one after v4.3.4: the release's single 'Added' line — a Turbopack loader — ships a README config that silently turns CSS modules global, and the color-mix crash now has two fixes and zero reviewers.

A dynamic import does not prove code is deferred. Trace every eager path in the module graph, baseline routes, and fail releases that break the bundle budget.

Can replacing a library actually make your Next.js bundle smaller?

I replaced prism-react-renderer with Shiki and benchmarked the results using Turbopack Bundle Analyzer.

Surprisingly, the initial compressed bundle dropped by 3.38 KB.

RT @steventey: We just upgraded our @dubdotco monorepo to @nextjs 16.4.3 w/ Turbopack, and it's a gamechanger.

Our @vercel builds used to take ~11 mins, and it's now down to ~5 mins 🤯

This is HUGE especially with agent-driven development where halving build times == doubling agent turnaround time.

Under Turbopack, process.env[NAME] and a const env = process.env alias got inlined as well, though the @nextjs.org docs list both as not inlined.

Grep your .next folder for the value.

Makes sense.
This is the unfortunate problem with the limited API of turbopack.
Thanks for the clarification :)

I really like technical insight posts. Thank you for creating and sharing this.

Out of curiosity: Why does the source code transform not work in turbopack currently? I assume the integration would be similar to other bundlers no?

Patching RSC? npm ls react isn't the check.

The critical RCE (CVSS 9.5) is in react-server-dom-webpack, -parcel and -turbopack. Patched: 19.0.9 / 19.1.10 / 19.2.9 / 19.3.1. Next.js: 16.4.1 / 15.5.28.

A server in your UI means a server's patch queue.

vinext puts the Next.js API on @vite.dev instead of Turbopack or webpack, so a framework team maintains far less of its own tooling.

It was weekend code and felt too sloppy to push.

Your aliasing write up was super helpful btw! I love what react compiler can do. I recently joined vercel on turbopack and have been try to push for us to invest more in it.

I'd love to hear any ideas you had that didn't make it in yet.

The Next.js 16.4 release focuses heavily on operational polish. Turbopack continues its diet with reduced output bundle footprints, alongside lazy compilation upgrades and tighter integration with React 19.3 and Cache Components.
