It took me years to realize that two Malovs I knew from very different parts of Turkology were father and son. Euthymius Malov (1835–1918), an archpriest in Kazan, taught “anti-Muslim subjects” at the Kazan Theological Academy.

Salmin’s works are scarcely distinguishable from pseudohistory. Yet in 2014 his monograph appeared in English, edited and introduced by Peter Golden — a curious episode in modern Turkology.

Not from the correspondences alone. Extrapolating Proto-Narrow Turkic reconstruction to the Proto-Turkic level is generally a questionable idea, likely shaped by Turkology being taught mainly via Turkish or Old Turkic while Chuvash remains understudied.

He introduced his son Sergei (1880–1957) to Turkology early, hoping he would one day inherit his chair. Sergei became one of the great Turkologists of the 20th century, publishing major Old Turkic and Old Uyghur texts, documenting Turkic languages in China, and helping develop new alphabets.
