It's the #TwelveDaysOfWhalemas Day Five! #DYK the Southern hemisphere's Humpback pop is the most robust with approximate 50,000 individuals & counting? Frequenting the coasts of Australia & New Zealand (to name a few) these animals complete the longest annual migration of any mammal

It's the #TwelveDaysOfWhalemas Day Nine: DYK whale flukes contain no bones? They are different between all species but in some, flukes are so distinctive that researchers use them like fingerprints to ID individuals.⠀

Although they resemble whales in many ways they are a different taxonomic order referring to herbivorous marine mammals.

It's the #TwelveDaysOfWhalemas Day Two: #DYK that #SRKW all have distinct vocal patterns, as do all Orca populations?! Each pod (J, K, L) sounds a little bit different from the other & it has been thought that these differences help individuals avoid inbreeding within their pod.

It's the #TwelveDaysOfWhalemas Day Three: #DYK Narwhals were once thought to be the "missing link" to the mythical unicorn? Research has now shown us that the long "tusk" of this Arctic whale is in fact a tooth that protrudes from inside their mouth out through their upper lip.

It's the #TwelveDaysOfWhalemas Day 7: Today we celebrate "Luna" (the Red-nosed KW?!). This light installation was a part of Lumiere Vancouver & was named after L98, a #SRKW separated from his mother & spent five years in Nootka Sound, unfortunately becoming a tourist attraction before dying in 2016

It's the #TwelveDaysOfWhalemas Day Eight! Family is so important to so many animals, especially Orcas. North America's Resident pops swim with their mothers her descendants for their entire lives. Everything they know is passed down through the family: feeding strategies, territory, even language.
