pDCs run a distinct iron programme:
high TFRC, continuous iron flux, and targeted use in mitochondrial pathways, without increased iron storage.

pDC have lots of surface transferrin receptor and continuous transferrin-iron import. In contrast, cDC keep lots of their transferrin receptor intracellularly, ready to export to the membrane if needed. Despite constant, uptake pDC to not accumulate iron but express the iron exporter ferroportin. Iron is not required for pDC's best described function, the production of type one interferon.
