Fury vs Joshua is finally signed. The indie dev version: SwiftUI vs UIKit.

I ship both. Brewsta is UIKit, everything newer is SwiftUI. Which corner are you in for a new app in 2026?

Yeah, UIKit is still the way, if you care about smoothness in these kind of apps.

The last batch of retain/releases in the core parsing loop of SwiftTerm is gone, and now SwiftTerm is on the vtbench on average only 3% slower than Ghostty 1.4

Get it while it is hot!

TBF, the current React native app is more buttery smooth than ALL the SwiftUI clients and also the majority of UIKit-based ones.

(and I'm very sensitive to scrolling smoothness)
October 28, 2026 at 10:26 PM
I think I got this wrong, most of the list sticky header stuff is using the stock UIKit behavior. But on 27.0 it all looked different and janky in every app. Cleaned up on 27.2. Still would like access to the scroll pocket for more custom things.

i do believe that yea. i spent a considerable amount of tokens having it do a ton of performance work on recycling, video playback, etc. the original outcomes were Not Good

fwiw i also avoided swiftui like the plague and had it uikit everything

Yeah SwiftUI clients are always going to lose because scrolling is just realllll janky still. UIKit with a little TLC will def. blow the socks off of React Native though

@zzt To be fair, they had been using ‘AppKit doesn’t support touch interfaces’/‘touch interfaces are totally different’ as their excuse for reinventing the AppKit wheel as UIKit for iOS since 2008

wait, that still doesn’t make sense

Sean Heber:

"I sped up the Tapestry timeline by over 350% by getting rid of SwiftUI. Increasingly of the opinion that SwiftUI was a huge mistake."

If I had been in charge at Apple, I would’ve done a streamlined Obj-C and unified all platforms around UIKit. It’s such a mess of different APIs now.

Codename One paints its own UI, so there's no UIKit button for VoiceOver. A semantics tree beside the component tree maps to each platform's accessibility API, and unit tests can assert on it.

Accessibility Semantics: The UI Tree You Cannot See
Codename One now builds a portable accessibility semantics tree for its lightweight components and maps it to VoiceOver, TalkBack, UI Automation, AT-SPI, Java accessibility, and web ARIA.
