Today a bunch of fascists in the Channel risked multiple lives, and were possibly guilty of attempted murder, in addition to massively wasting the time and resources of UKBF and RNLi.

It must be all over the BBC online headlines.

Isn’t it?
Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics.

A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

It already exists. Immigration Enforcement (IE) was created as part of the UKBF in 2008 (under Home Secretary Jacqui Smith as Home Secretary in Gordon Brown's government) before being hived off as an agency in its own right by Theresa May as Home Secretary in the Cameron government.

……according to the Eurostar website UKBF do exit checks

Weird, but I guess it must be a new post Brexit thing

Gavin would never let facts get in the way of policy. It was reported in recent weeks that 70% of UKBF checks are in NI and no particular issue relating to the CTA has been identified. But I guess he's been distracted with the other stuff he didn't know about his own party of late.

You can bet an “Emperor penguin’s worth” goes missing ahead of the UKBF Xmas do

On your question. I don't think we can guarantee that all members of UKBF will make rational decisions.

On the last. It's a loophole that they might any time change by including the Yes/No question " Are you a UK citizen?" in the ETA application.

As I wrote, it's a risk. Entering might work or not

Aside from global compliance, the immigration queues at Heathrow and Gatwick are a massive and self-imposed cost on the country / UKBF. Given that the chips in the passports are basically replacing OCR fonts on the pages plus the digitised image for anti-fraud, it's not a bad accelerator. But➡️➡️➡️

The Home Office is winking heavily that you *can* get an ETA but you *shouldn't* even though they have no way of identifying dual nationals unless you specificity tell them and there is no database that UKBF or airlines can use.

Poorly designed legislation and de facto but not de jure rules.
March 21, 2026 at 4:47 PM
So UKBF is going to refuse people they suspect to be British on the basis that they can't prove they are, even though being British gives them an absolute right of entry?

It's not a legal requirement to use a UK passport either as they have told parliament.

I know people who obtained ETAs.
February 26, 2026 at 7:51 AM
There is no actual legal requirement for a dual national to enter on a UK passport - that's what the home office told Parliament.

You can get an ETA on a visa waiver country's passport, but that does mean not declaring you're a dual national.

If UKBF insists you are then - automatic right of entry
February 25, 2026 at 12:58 PM
On this? Naaa they like looking tough on border control. All the while knowing that the vast majority of dual nationals will just get an ETA on their other passport and that UKBF has no way of knowing.

And if they did no law broken, absolute right to enter anyway.
February 24, 2026 at 10:07 PM
Get an ETA - as it cost them £589 to do a certificate of entitlement they haven't a clue who's a dual national.

What are UKBF going to do? "Oh you're actually British" gives an automatic right of entry. Airlines can't check and are exempt section 40 fines for UK citizens anyway.

Security theatre.
February 24, 2026 at 9:47 PM
Airlines can't tell, and UKBF apparently can't or the ETA app would not issue the authorisation.

And "we think you're British" gives an automatic right of entry.

No legislation requiring a dual national uses a UK passport to enter.
February 24, 2026 at 12:25 PM
Not on most low cost airlines inside Europe.

So now not only do I *have* to have two passports but now I'm doing admin for UKBF?

All to deal with the 3566 arrivals with insufficient documentation at UK airports (YE June '25) out of around 139 million international arrivals?

Makes perfect sense.
February 21, 2026 at 8:48 AM
They however can't deny entry to UK citizens and as your exempt the ETA requirements can't apply the entry ban that arises from a false declaration.
They've painted themselves into a corner, so someone will have a test case if UKBF ever tries to enforce this and apply sanctions.
February 20, 2026 at 6:04 PM
I'm not, I'm travelling on a valid travel document with an ETA.

UKBF stops me and says "but you're British".

So what? If I am they cannot stop me from entering the country and using a non-UK passport is not an offence.

The ETA regulations don't apply to UK citizens - no offence.
February 20, 2026 at 5:41 AM
But you would have valid travel documents under section 40 guidance - a passport and an ETA.

So the airline's system won't flag you.

If UKBF pick you up as a UK citizen, again highly unlikely, they can't deny you entry and as the ETA rules don't apply is it fraud anyway?

I used Eurostar 4 weeks ago. My passport was definitely checked by an uniformed agent of UK Border Force as I went into StP departure lounge. Sequence was check-in (automatic), bag scan, UKBF, French border officials (all humans)

If we want to extend the range of ASW USVs and UUVs, we could forward-deploy them and/or buy relatively cheap 42m customs cutters from Damen

And/or have support ships such as tanker and replenishment ships carry such drones, making them much more survivable.

Imagine not – we had stopped taking goods to Belgium before Brexit happened.
Though the Customs booth at Cherbourg was empty last year – and that was a daytime arrival.
Car searched out and back, but that was UKBF in Poole!
