A Swallowtail, a cream coloured, black, blue and red butterfly, on a bramble flower at Hickling Broad, Norfolk in June. I came into the year having seen one once at Hickling in 2023 with a big goal to try and photograph one on our Norfolk trip in June and I was so pleased to get splendid views of these gigantic butterflies. A Clouded Yellow, a yellow butterfly, on yellow ragwort flowers in the sun at Lakeside Country Park, Hampshire in August. One of a few lepidoptera species which have had a truly bumper year with so many around, to date I've seen at least one on forty three occasions across six counties in 2026. It's usually a species I feel lucky if I can see in a year so I've really treasured every sighting. A Queen of Spain Fritillary, an orange butterfly, on vegetation at Monk Sherborne, Hampshire in August. A species I'd never seen before, when I heard these rare visitors had turned up in the county I was hoping to see them and I was excited to.

Meanwhile, a friend spotted a massive flux of 100+ Clouded Yellow on mixed alfalfa/clover/trefoil fields in a nearby village. It would have been rude not to check them out. I counted about 50 CYs, and got an in-flight snapshot of one the males haring about #UKButterflies #MigrantSpecies
The Clouded Yellow is a migrant to the UK and doesn't, AFAIK, survive our winters (it will eventually, but needs its foodplants to be in bloom over winter to do so, not just about temperature as it doesn't hibernate). Nevertheless, it does breed here, and has done on this farm patch as there were lots of pristine specimens around. A friend saw hundreds a couple of days ago, I think I topped out counting at about 50.

Found two Clouded Yellows (Colias croceus) in a meadow in Nazeing, Essex on 21st September, one typical and one pale form helice. Had fun trying to get some upper shots of the helice form, but as usual only a few blurry photos were the result. #EssexWildlife #UKButterflies

At #Seasalter yesterday ,the weather was a bit hit and miss ,but I managed to find 21 Clouded Yellows (3 Helice),probably 40-50 Wall Browns and numerous Common Blues .Good to see 3-4 Shrill Carder Bees,although they refused to come up out of their ditch ! @ssmikeg.bsky.social #UKButterflies#insects
