So the magic reduced Grint's tax from £2.2m to £450k.

But HMRC applied the Beatles clause. And a tax tribunal just ruled that they were correct to do so: https://caselaw.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ukftt/tc/2024/956. He owes about £1.7m (plus interest, which will be big).

Judge Alexandra Marks was pretty scathing in her judgment, describing DBT “concerns about potentially undermining confidence in lender/customer obligations" as "not only unevidenced but also tenuous”.
