It's #UKFungusDay so naturally I'm out and about despite the dreary weather. Here's a few from this morning.

Resharing for #UKFungusDay. Even our local park has a wide variety of interesting fungus to spot. This is the collection so far this season.
Thread documenting the 2026 mushroom season in our local park, showing the variety of what's growing there. Last year we saw 20 different types.

Here are the first four....

#ukfungusday and nice to finally have Waxcaps up and about. Surveys this week still have a feeling of early September in terms of who's fruiting. The hot dry summer really seems to have pushed the season back.

Not all fungi are toadstools! Here’s a grey covering of Clover Powdery Mildew, Erysiphe trifoliorum, on White Melilot, Melilotus albus, in @cubotanicgarden.bsky.social today. 🩶😉

Happy #UKFungusDay!
Find me until 4pm in the Botanic Garden‘s FungiFieldDay @cubotanicgarden.bsky.social talking about my research on the interaction between #Marchantia and a fungus that loves #liverworts @slcuplants.bsky.social

I agree, couldn’t face driving from Cambridge so I’ve spent
#UKFungusDay looking for fungi that aren’t toadstool shaped. Here’s an example - Shropshire Blue! 😉

An ecological niche on a single leaf!
Common Lime leaf…
…attacked by sap-sucking insects secreting honeydew
…on which sooty mould fungi grew
…and through which are tiny snail tracks!

It's not all woodland wonders - some fungi prefer the more out-in-the-open vibes. This #UKFungusDay we celebrate our colourful grassland gems - the waxcaps 🍄

Despite the recent rain, still rather few fungi round Peterborough. Today I only found a scatter of Persistent Waxcaps at Swaddywell, while earlier this week a walk at Castor Hanglands NNR only yielded a cluster of Common Inkcap, a Parasola sp. and some Yellow Stag's-horn

🌱🌾🌍🌺🍄🌳🌲🌿🍃🖌🐡 #UKFungusDay What better at the start of autumn than fungi? From iconic large multicoloured mushrooms to tiny, weeny, hardly visible ones, time for fungi to get spreading their spores. Want to know more about fungi? Why not try @britmycolsoc.org.uk as a start - local groups, workshops?
