The abuse of power is at the root of so many problems in organisations, yet it isn’t always clear to those involved in school governance where power actually lies. #UKGovsRead

Join the Easter #UKGovsRead read and chat - the subject? The recent report from HEPI - 'Boys will be Boys'
#UKGovsRead I've long been troubled by this stat "While 96% of the prison population is male, 57% of adult prisoners have literacy levels below those expected of an 11-year-old" (p.5) Are we setting up some of our boys for this future? What can we do differently? Do read with me & join the chat 2/2

Happy NewYear - reading suggestions for #UKEdGovs #UKGovsRead
I've been doing a bit of #UKGovsRead here as a # but haven't set up an account or feed here. I'm off X completely
I'm reading about SEND at the mo - it's my personal dev goal this yr & I think we're going to have it as our area of enquiry for summer term. I've also been dipping into Rebecca's book

The JMI I volunteer in holds parent lunches (1-2 per year for each class) - parents join for lunch and rest of the afternoon - mainly mums but some dads. A Dad Day to help around the school was run at a different place (on a wkend) - playground painting, mud kitchen etc. Be good to hear ideas!

Yes, power is an interesting concept isn't it - it sounds aggressive but really it's in every interaction we undertake in our daily lives. Power through expertise/knowledge, position, legitimacy, connections, access to capital (of all kinds) #UKGovsRead #UKEdGovs

Then I almost disappeared into a whirlwind of questions prompted by the definition - who holds power, who is listened to and really heard, about doing our best to make sure power is used for good and more #UKGovsRead

I think not only who makes the decisions, but how those decisions are made is key and then of course how we follow and respond to the consequences #UKGovsRead

On another note, it is absolutely brilliant to read an education book that actually talks consistently about education "leaders and governors". So often governance is missed out of the conversation. #UKEdGovs #UKGovsRead Governance is part of our system - Governance Matters!

Have you any new school governors at your school in Sept?

If so, do not miss giving them SBW A-Z of Governance.

It’s 70 superb pages to help them to fire on all cylinders.

At a recent board meeting our SEND governor challenged the board asking "Does every one of you at this table understand our statutory responsibilities for SEND?" Well I'm reading this to brush up on my knowledge as a result of this Q. P11 moves to the SEND Code of Practice #UKEdGovs #UKGovsRead 1/2

Finding this a thought provoking read for governance "If a decision on strategy is based on getting it right for the most vulnerable members of the school community, it is likely to be a decision that works for all learners" (p5) #UKEdGovs #AlwaysLearning #UKGovsRead
