Chancellor is probably a devoted reader of @uktpo.org or perhaps just possibly had similar ideas about the approaching Trump storm on trade and how the UK could handle it. Because setting out a clear path in public as suggested is what just happened... blogs.sussex.ac.uk/uktpo/2024/1...

We’re outraged when Trump imposes trade arrangements/tariffs without congressional approval.

& that’s just been ruled unconstitutional.

But the British PM, unlike US & EU counterparts, can use Royal Prerogative to sign huge trade deals without scrutiny by MPs 😳

I'd like to think that it's down to @pmdfoster.bsky.social ’s deep digging on this with a little bit of help from us at UKTPO. NB they already can open new Customs Sites. But noone wants to invest in them.
turns out that when government announced 5 new Freeports last week it meant…

….there won’t be any new Freeports

instead five existing freeports will get official clearance to have custom sites within their boundaries

& some other areas (eg in Pharma). But while UK *has to* accept EU CE marks, not even UK firms want UKCA certificates. So why would EU agree an MR on CA? Starmer has to come up with a big offer to the EU. I don't understand it all, but UKTPO blog on this coming out soon: errors our own.

Have read and pondered. It seems to me the UKTPO analysis suggests the answer isn't clear cut. See especially this extract:

Thanks to the good folk of @uktpo.org my take on how the UK should respond to Trump on trade. Expect a series of trade conflicts, so be clear up front that our commitment is to global trade rules and our major flows, and don't see ourselves as brokers or special blogs.sussex.ac.uk/uktpo/2024/1...

Interesting UKTPO brief on EU and common law developments on supply chain monitoring. All part of an international trend of traceability and assurance, but big question how that plays with others around resilience and growth. blogs.sussex.ac.uk/uktpo/2024/1...

No expert, but doesn't seem to be factually accurate. Brexit DID make exporting more difficult by introducing ROO on UK exports to EU.

Notably on EV, so much so UK lobbied to have the implementation date shifted to 2027.

NB I don't think most UK media reports cover Trump and trade very well, and differ to what specialists are discussing in which frankly the UK is not a priority for tariffs. My version here, others from the usual suspects are available. blogs.sussex.ac.uk/uktpo/2024/1...
