United Nations-commissioned human rights experts have concluded there are reasonable grounds to believe the United States committed a war crime when it struck a school in Iran during a joint US-Israeli military operation in February. An international fact-finding mission focused on two airstrikes that killed at least 178 civilians, including women and children. One of the strikes hit the Shajareh Tayyebeh school in Minab, in southern Iran, where Iranian state media reported 168 deaths, most of them children. The UN-backed team stated that following the attacks on February 28, it found reasonable grounds to believe the US launched indiscriminate attacks resulting in civilian deaths and damage to civilian objects. The Trump administration has not directly accepted responsibility or released findings from a Pentagon investigation into the school bombing. A Sky News investigation cited seven independent experts who said evidence pointed to US responsibility, noting that US intelligence analysts had ample opportunity to identify the building as a school before the strike. Military insiders revealed concerns that the Pentagon had been using outdated targeting information for years, but warnings were ignored. The fact-finding team also investigated a separate airstrike in Lamerd, where precision missiles dispersed tungsten pellets over a sports complex and residential area, killing 22 civilians. US Central Command denied responsibility for that strike. The mission, chaired by Bangladeshi jurist Sara Hossain and created in 2022 by the UN Human Rights Council, also alleged that Iranian state security forces committed crimes against humanity on a staggering scale, leaving civilians caught between violations by their own government and the conflict with the US and Israel.
