"Oh, my God"

"What is it?"

"It's a birdcage"

"For what?"

My 3D anatomical study of a large male Pteranodon longiceps. The skeleton is a generalised composite as per usual with my models, but is scaled to UNSM 50130 (a very large and almost complete wing)

Hello Bluesky! Here are two Paleocastors (fossil beavers) from UNSM vertebrate paleontology department. Aren't they amazing!

Happy #FossilFriday! In October, UNSM doubled our holdings of an unusual extinct species, Dasypus bellus, which literally translates to “beautiful armadillo.”✨ It was about twice the size of the modern nine-banded armadillo. These specimens are from 12-25 thousand years ago.🦴

Hey Ben,
The museum is its own separately funded unit, so while this hurts, and directly affects our curators and interns from EAS, UNSM including Ashfall and Trailside remains open and active.

That said, we are gutted. EAS have been allies and partners with the museum for a hundred years. No more.

This #FossilFriday, we're excited to share about research UNSM curator Ash Poust contributed to proving the “Nanotyrannus,” a teacup variation of the “T. rex,” did exist!🦖 Poust and a team led by Christopher Griffin of Princeton University had their findings published in Science yesterday!🔬

Happy #FossilFriday! Pictured is a jaw fragment from a mosasaur, a large marine reptile. It was found in 85-million-year-old Cretaceous limestone along the Missouri River bluffs, which formed at the bottom of a shallow inland sea during that time.🏞️

What can evolution do in 20 million years?

For camels in North America, it gets you from the size of a greyhound to the size of a giraffe.
Hope you can stretch your legs this weekend!

Teeth of a swordfish-esque predator from ancient seaways.

Protosphyraena swam the waters covering the great plains during the time of the dinosaurs. Part of a large donation by Ben Vrana to @UNSM

A Little Bitty Mammoth.
This young skull is one of the smallest we have here in the Elephant Room - its whole head was not much bigger than the single adult tooth on the right.

Greetings and Happy #FossilFriday
A quiet end of the week here at UNSM, but I'm kept company by some of the largest beasts to ever walk the Earth.
Here's one of our better Bison latifrons specimens, with horns spanning over 2 meters - if I lay down next to it they'd be longer than me! ⚒️🧪🦕

Pete Hegseth is like when no one respects the existing government, which is what we're headed towards as a society in the UnSm if we continue with Trump's poor leadership. So we'll all be Pete Hegseths after awhile, and that will be tumultuous.

First, congrats to George Corner who has retired after...54 years as the UNSM collections manager. This is a fantastic collection. I hope that one of you wonderful paleos become the next one!

On the last #FossilFriday there are wonderful sights,
As I check on the fossils and turn out the lights,
The mammoths are nestled all snug in their beds,
I wonder what visions danced through these ancient heads?
