You could put strobe lights & air horns on the UPexpress & there’s a cohort who will only think you can drive to the airport (not this guy - he knows but he’s appealing to a small group of Toronto people & esp biz elites). Deserving of endless mocking, all of them.
Pierre Poilievre says the Billy Bishop runway expansion would have "an enormous environmental benefit" because "it will take cars off the road."

Guess where I am. No, guess.

Just in transit, on my way to a workshop in Kingston.

The UPExpress has really unlocked possibility of taking Via to Belleville/Kingston after a YVR-YYZ flight. For a solo traveler it is cheaper than rental car. Much less risk of falling asleep at the wheel too....

Happy 10th Birthday to the UP Express.

Opened on June 6, 2015 it provided a rail link between Union Station and Toronto Pearson International Airport, with stops at Bloor and Weston Stations.

Were you there on opening day?

Pearson is only 15 minutes away on UPExpress, so I can only think these "business community" chatterers hate Pearson airport. Who doesn't hate Pearson? Too bad, you can't have Toronto's waterfront 🤷‍♀️
Why exactly is this airport valuable?

How exactly does it contribute to the local economy while carrying 4% of passengers?

No one can ever say. It’s vibes upon vibes.

The airport itself can’t even cook up a plausible economic impact statement.

Toronto business community 'disappointed' Billy Bishop jet expansion isn't moving forward
Business groups call Ottawa decision to halt expansion for jets a missed opportunity that could leave the downtown airport on 'borrowed time.'

GO Transit currently carries 7.5million last month on trains and UPExpress only (excluding the regional buses that they also operate).

I'll never understand going to Union for any reason other than for GO/Via/UpExpress. It's not a destination in/of itself for me. The businesses are places I kill time in waiting to board. Returning, I just want to get home not hang around there. I can walk to tons of good restos outside Union.

Honestly, this change makes sense though UPExpress will need renaming. Without renovating Pearson airport for lower-platform trains, we create a conflict at Wice between services to Pearson and local KIT services from Malton. Further, there are only three tracks from Wice to Malton, limiting locals.
More details on the modified St. Clair-Old Weston Station have been released

Part of the platform will be used by the
UP Express, longer 4 to 5 car trains will be able to stop here.

The rest will remain unused. In the future, this station may be a stop on the GO Transit Kitchener Line

Photo memories just reminded me of this pic I took of a sign in the junction letting people how many more piles needed to be driven to build the (UPExpress) underpass). Remember the incessant pounding the entire west side could hear??

I don’t think UPExpress can be an express without a comprehensive rethink of track assignments and infrastructure. Just call it UPLink or the Pearson Line. UP trains are assigned the westernmost track pair (T3&T4) which is the track pair for local trains where new local stations will be.

I think I saw @ontariotrafficman.bsky.social post this idea, but I think OL could also take over the UPExpress service’s local tracks on the Kitchener corridor as an alternative to a Dufferin or Parkside alignment.
I also honestly think we try to make rapid transit follow streets too much.

Then, all services would be electrified (at least to Bramalea) and divert by tunnel under the airport (eliminating UPExpress and high-floor trains from the network, sold to a US system like Boston or Metra Electric). Pearson spur could be repurposed for use by a Line 6 extension via Woodbine.

Metrolinx should sell its UPExpress DMUs to SMART when it gets electric EMUs for the Pearson services.

About 5 years ago my Toronto to Ottawa train got stopped for four hours around Brockville. And then reversed to Toronto, where I hopped on the last UPExpress to Pearson, slept in the airport (that’s an experience), and took a 5am flight home. 24 hours, all in.

I almost always fly now.
Not sure those unfamiliar with the geography of Eastern Ontario appreciate how absurd it is Via forced passengers to sleep overnight at the station in Brockville

Brockville is only an hour and a half drive from Ottawa. Via couldn’t get buses to shuttle them back? How is there no contingency plan?

That’s Toronto’s situation. Lakeshores run over 4tph in the peak direction at rush hour with diesel locomotives hauling 12 bilevel coaches (to the surprise of some foreign rail fans) and UPExpress runs 4tph all day long with DMUs.
Also Adelaide has that situation with the Outer Harbour/Grange line.
