#UPranking
Paid subscribers won’t get special treatment elsewhere in the app, like upranking premium accounts or blue checks next to their names. We won’t sell your data. And we won’t hyperfinancialize the social experience (through tokens, NFTs, etc.).

lmfao yeah expect subscriber upranking within six months

This is a very good point. Twitter as it existed in day 2021 simply doesn’t exist anymore. And not in the way I think most people think. Most of it’s the upranking of right wingers. It’s also the downranking of links which makes it increasingly irrelevant for the sharing of actual information.

when is someone going to port the twitter for you algorithm into bsky (minus the whole upranking ragebait part)

Also note that @rose.bsky.team has promised that paid subscribers will NOT get special treatment elsewhere in the app, like upranking or blue checks etc. (Unlike that Other Place)

bsky.app/profile/did:...
To grow sustainably, we’re working on a subscription model for premium features like higher-quality video uploads and profile customizations (think colors and avatar frames), but Bluesky will always be free to use. We believe information and conversation should stay accessible to everyone.

what i don't think Rufo gets is that that it is unlikely that musk can manage to do that without returning the site back to the liberal majority it was before takeover: a huge driver of this was the blue check payouts and the upranking of paid users
*Chris Rufo* warns X is making the right too conspiratorial:

"Americans can stick to...empirical reality or...follow conspiracy theories... For the Right, the danger is that an increasingly large fraction of our political coalition is choosing the second path"

Our new article in @science.org enables social media reranking outside of platforms' walled gardens.

We add an LLM-powered reranking of highly polarizing political content into N=1256 participants' feeds. Downranking cools tensions with the opposite party—but upranking inflames them.

I’m a huge fan of the not upranking part that to me was what turned the old place into a this is fine meme

The two strongest algorithms: Uprank Bridging + Downrank Toxic, and Add News. Notably, upranking constructive content alone wasn't enough, we also needed to reduce the prominence of outrage and toxicity. But merely adding diverse news, without any re-ranking, also worked!

A lot more people seem to be talking about moral OCD now but they're all people I know so I can't figure out whether the targeting algorithm is upranking their posts or whether I've somehow caused a temporary local upsurge of actual interest in the topic

This is what paid features should be - no changes to core functions, no "upranking" for accounts, etc.

Rather, it's aimed towards those who want to customize further or need higher quality for things like brand promotion. 🙌

It’s the ability to customize/tune the results page (upranking/downranking/blacklisting sites among other features) and if thats important enough to be worth $10/mo to you

Theyre both pretty dang good at doing what search engines should do.

No algorithmic downranking or upranking from Elon or Mark. Bots and trolls are rare in comments. 🦋

I still think this isn’t a bad idea considering countless front ends can exist anyway. I’d rather see a company try make money this way instead of going straight to ads and upranking.

Discord isn’t good at subscriptions because they lock so much away, so I hope it doesn’t go that way in the end

Now this is how you do a subscription service.

No upranking accounts or paying to get “verified”. Just fun little perks and customization options for your profile.

I’m honestly interested to see what they are and I’m happily interested in supporting them!

We’ve added a new design to the library, rated emergent: 🔍Upranking Civility

By surfacing more respectful content, the intervention aims to lower hostility among users and, specifically, affective polarization between opposing political groups.

"Bluesky will always be free to use" is the important takeaway here people. The site is free for users, but websites still have operating costs and they're not running this out of the kindness of their hearts.

Lets hold back the pitchforks and torches until they break that promise on upranking.

See, was that so hard? lol this is all we wanted back in the day.
Paid accounts for more features but no upranking bullshit.

I'll definitely want some of that subscription when it comes around~

Also hoping this keeps ads away.

the fact that they mention not upranking paid accounts really says a lot here

first, i don't know what they mean by "higher quality video" as i've attached countless 1080p60 videos with posts in the past, and they played with no problem

but paywalling color customizations is a bit weird tho

So long as the feature set for free users (such as base video quality) isn't terrible, idm them doing this too much

Twitter Blue's biggest fuckup was upranking whilst also offering to pay active accounts. Essentially incentivising interaction farming (eg: rage bait, spam)

Not upranking paid accounts is a big one, although I'll always be wary for the time when outside forces come in to impact information that gets shared on social media platforms like ones before this.
