Turner wanted USFWS to release Mexican wolves at his ranch in SW NM

We asked him if he wanted to do an ESA Safe harbors agreement so he wouldn’t be on the hook if something were to happen to them, & he said no, the ranch was for the wolves

As I recall concerns from neighbors killed the release

Agree

Turner wanted CA condors released at his ranch in northern NM

But bc of potential political blowback USFWS higher ups killed the idea

Many R-2 RO higher ups lived in fear of upsetting ranchers

I learned the cow is the most holy & sacred animal in NM & nothing may be done that upsets them
True story.
Wolves would have been better off if they were released there.

Turner had his own Biologist working full time for him monitoring the ranch and wildlife.

Hotel approved by State of CA in Sand City

Back In The Day,USFWS told Sand City no way ever would we issue an ESA section 7 or 10(a)(1)(B) permit for listed Smith’s blue butterfly for hotel construction west of I-101

Times change, but Smith’s blue is still endangered

Nice

Judge Lee gave U.S. Flop & Waffle Service more than enough time (30 April ‘27) to make a final determination

All that’s needed for a final listing is respond to comments received in the proposed rule & update w/new info

But also USFWS may decide to be dicks & withdrawal the proposed listing

Uday (Don Trump jr) hunting w/Russian oligarch in Mongolia

Were they hunting Argali?

Politics of its protection tore USFWS apart (back when USFWS protected imperiled species)

Mongolian Argali listed ESA threatened but can be imported to U.S. w/proper permits

USFWS challenged again over threatened species protections
(Missoula Current) Several conservation groups are suing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service after the Trump administration reversed an agency rule that has helped protect threatened species for decades. Last week, six conservation organizations sued Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and the Fish and Wildlife Service in Butte federal district court for repealing a rule that had protected members of a threatened species from harm or death. The repeal is the second attempt of a Trump administration to eliminate the rule and lessen protection for threatened species. “Wildlife needs help as soon as we recognize it’s in trouble. This rollback opens the door to killing newly listed threatened animals that would otherwise be protected. A species lost to extinction can never be brought back,” said Ben Greuel, Sierra Club’s national wildlife campaign manager, in a statement. The organizations include the Sierra Club, WildEarth Guardians, National Parks Conservation Association, Conservation Council for Hawai‘i, Save the Manatee Club and Humane World for Animals, formerly the Humane Society of the United States. The “Blanket 4(d) Rule” has existed since 1975, two years after Congress passed the Endangered Species Act, to give threatened species some of the protections that the law requires for endangered species...

The destruction of protected wildlife sanctuaries in Texas for border wall construction continues long after the slogan was forgotten.

I know from being around them that USFWS doesn't play around *at all* when it comes to protecting resources they're responsible for, and that act in particular.

USFWS or NMFS (depending on the species). Not EPA.

Consider the nit picked. No extra charge.

not an actual bat expert and i can't speak to that particular modeling work, but wind turbines are a huge issue for bat conservation. USFWS recommends 10mi setbacks and there's quite a bit of evidence that's not really enough.

I had friends who worked for USFWS in Fairbanks and had to walk past Bush II and Cheney every day. When Obama took office somehow those photos ended up at a party I attended, complete with a shredder. I recall the tipsy homeowner cackling about the shredded dick and bush on his carpet.
