続）エッセイに書いたか忘れたけど、2015年頃のユニクロSoho店は、NARUTOやHello KittyやUKIYOEのTシャツを売りながら、奥の肌着売場ではムスリマたちが「これこれ、長袖エアリズム、日本の叡智〜！」と爆買いしてたりするような、つまり国内店舗に外国人観光客が増えてるのとそう変わらない光景だった。2026年のユニクロUSQ店は、主力商品が超ミニプリーツスコートや一分丈ショートレギンスである。日本でも売ってるだろうし若い子は穿くだろうけど。「どこの国のブランドか知らんがATHLETAより安く『夏の制服』が買える店だ」みたいな新しい客層を眺めるだけ眺めて帰った。俺は買うものがない。

続）ところでユニクロ海外快進撃の余波は当地にも及んでいて、10年前にソーホー旗艦店の社員に実情聞いたら「やべえです、虫の息ですよ、アニメTシャツしか売れません」だったのに、10年後の今現在は目に見えて好調、先日新規開店したUSQの店もごった返していた。そして主な客層は、アニメTシャツなんか絶対に買わなさそうな、もっと一般的な米国人たちである。

日本の量産型ファッションとは別に米国にも量産型男女というのがいて、ユニクロの新店舗には、彼らが買いたくなるものしか置いていない。見事に。この10年で、完全に棚作りを変えたのだなと思う。自分が10代の頃に東京のGapで買い物してたののほうを思い出す光景。
