This is personal for me, since I used to be on the USWDS team, and I used USWDS every day for years before that when I was at 18F. Also the person responsible for removing everyone from repo is the person who implemented the order to kill IRS Direct File at Treasury—truly a world-class ghoul.

What’s the point of having a design system most people can’t use? By contrast, USWDS is HTML, CSS, and a little JS. It works everywhere and in every tech stack.

It looked like USWDS might have been spared from the executive order creating the National Design Studio, but after NDS recently established a beachhead inside Login.gov, that hope quickly evaporated, and today's activity all but proves they're coming for USWDS.

I haven't been at GSA since last year so I don't have inside info here, but I strongly suspect that they're going to hollow out USWDS and replace it with some React/ShadCN-based replacement. It'll be the private equity husk version of USWDS.

I am beyond furious that they (new TTS leadership from DOGE) pushed out the last USWDS civil servant and took it over. No one who will work on it knows the value (or magic) of USWDS, or how to use it, or even what a design system is. 🤬

What really chaps my ass is that this website doesn't use the U.S. Web Design System. It's taken a decade for that to become the dominant design language of U.S. government websites, and it's a clear "fuck you" to launch a new .gov this shitty instead of just using USWDS.
