El Mar de Arena de Ubari, en el sur de Libia, es una vasta extensión de dunas donde apenas llueve y la vida es escasa. Sin embargo, en medio de este desierto, emergen unos veinte lagos interconectados por acuíferos subterráneos, siendo el Gaberoun el más destacado. Estos cuerpos de agua son restos de un antiguo lago de gran tamaño existente hace cientos de miles de años, cuando el clima de la región era mucho más húmedo y favorable. La evaporación intensa ha convertido sus aguas en extremadamente saladas, comparables al Mar Muerto, pero aún así permiten la existencia de vegetación y fauna alrededor, creando oasis en medio de la arena. Antiguamente, tribus de beduinos vivían en sus alrededores, extrayendo agua del acuífero y alimentándose de crustáceos locales. Hoy en día, sus antiguos asentamientos permanecen como testimonio de su presencia, mientras los lagos atraen turistas interesados en contemplar esta maravilla natural. Este fenómeno destaca cómo el agua puede sostener ecosistemas únicos incluso en los entornos más hostiles y cómo la geografía y la historia climática de Libia han dado lugar a un paisaje excepcional.

Ubari, located in southern Libya, is home to a remarkable set of lakes known as the Ubari Lakes, situated within the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert. This desert region, sometimes called the Sand Sea, is an enormous area of dunes where rainfall is virtually nonexistent and vegetation cannot thrive. Despite these harsh conditions, about twenty lakes are scattered across the landscape, formed from remnants of a massive prehistoric lake that existed hundreds of thousands of years ago. The endorheic basin collected water from rivers and streams, supporting early human communities and diverse wildlife. Today, the lakes survive thanks to an interconnected underground aquifer system, which allows water to persist even under extreme heat and prolonged droughts. The largest and most famous lake, Gaberoun, is surrounded by an oasis that historically sustained local Bedouin tribes, who relied on small crustaceans for food and had to dig wells to access drinkable water. The lakes are extremely saline, with salinity levels comparable to the Dead Sea, yet they support vegetation and some wildlife in an otherwise barren desert. Ubari’s lakes are not only natural wonders but also a testament to the region's geological and climatic history, offering unique insights into how water shapes life in even the harshest environments.

El Mar de Arena de Ubari no se llama así por casualidad. Es una extensión de dunas del tamaño de Lituania donde nunca llueve y nada puede crecer. Decenas de miles de kilómetros con un único asentamiento, la ciudad que le da nombre a esa sección del Sáhara, y que es también la ciudad más meridional de Libia. Lo cual tiene su mérito porque hay literalmente cientos de miles de kilómetros cuadrados de territorio libio más al sur.
