Ubehebe Crater, Death Valley 🌋

2,100 years ago, a steam explosion created this 600ft-deep "maar." To the Timbisha Shoshone, it is Tempinna Ah-ka-voo-it (Coyote’s Basket)—a sacred ancestral site and the place where their people first emerged into the world.

Ubehebe crater. A phreatomagmatic eruption, where magmas impinge upon wet sediment or groundwater causing rapid vaporization. Volume expansion during vaporization causes the water saturated overburden (roof) to explode. Sudden depressurization causes magma to then erupt catastrophically.

Everyone was super excited to visit Ubehebe Crater. This crater formed by an explosive eruption when magma encountered groundwater and the subsurface. We even said hello to a prairie hawk (thanks @CintyLee for always IDing geologic formations and birds).

For #ArtAdventCalendar day 22, UBEHEBE CRATER was painted the last day of the IAAA Death Valley workshop in February. This painting captures our view of snow on the crater, and a landscape so alien, it’s an easy analog for other worlds. It was an incredible trip, full of great memories! #SciArt

Looking down into Ubehebe Crater, with a sign showing a person falling that warns to be careful around the edge as the footing may be dangerous. Flower is pink with five different red streaks on the interior (two seen in photo). Looking over towards the Little Hebe Crater, which is located right beside Ubehebe Crater. In the distance, a mountain ridge may be seen with slight snow caps on a couple of peaks. Looking across the lower crater area with steep walls surrounding it. Interesting how different areas of the crater have very different color schemes to them, from a rich deep gray to a lighter one as well as various shades of orange. The central orange area looks like sand from a distance, but appears more like cracked clay up close.
