The first-known #pyroCb in South Korea happened this morning (UTC) on a large fire near Uiseong. PyroCb are wildfire driven thunderstorms that can act like chimneys and transport smoke into the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere. H/T to the pyroCb community/email thread for catching this!

Power couple #KimWooBin and #ShinMinAh donated a total of 100 million KRW to aid recovery efforts following large-scale wildfires across the country, including in Sancheong, Uiseong and Ulju.

Their donations will be used to support wildfire victims and firefighters working to contain the blazes.

Drove through Sinnyeong the other day and stopped to take a few photos. The old station, with its triangular gabled roof, sat along the Jungang Line. It first opened on November 1, 1938, but closed for good last December with the electrification of the line’s Uiseong-Yeongcheon section.

4/ Officials consider today a critical turning point for complete containment. Helicopters and ground crews being deployed at maximum capacity since no additional rainfall is forecast in coming days. As Uiseong approaches full containment, resources will be redirected elsewhere.

2/ Major progress: Overall containment rate in North Gyeongsang Province now at 85% as of 5AM.

Uiseong area, where fires first ignited, has reached 95% containment.

Rainfall overnight and decreased wind speeds have finally provided favourable conditions for firefighters.

3/ Total affected area has grown to approximately 45,000 hectares, confirming this as South Korea's largest wildfire disaster in recorded history.

The fire has burned across 5 counties in North Gyeongsang: Uiseong (12,821ha), Andong (9,896ha), Cheongsong (9,320ha), and others.

3/ Current containment rates show limited progress despite week-long firefighting efforts: Sancheong-Hadong 77%, Uiseong 54%, Andong 52%, Cheongsong 77%, Ulsan/Ulju/Onyang 76%. The fires in Yeongdeok and Yeongyang remain largely uncontrolled at just 10% and 18% respectively.
